Do you ever feel sad and depressed suddenly with no reason? And even when you try to understand the reason, you found nothing? Maybe the problem was not about your thoughts in such case but your body.

One of the great paradoxes to understand our mind is the necessity of checking our body.

Think of the moment you thought leaving everything and everyone behind; your job, your fiancee/fiance and saying goodbye to your “old world” would be the best option. In such moment, it is quite possible to find yourself hungry, thirsty or sleepless.

Almost whole our considerations and moods are driven by the condition of our body. For instance, not having a sufficient sleep, lack of vitamins, getting dehydrated and feeling exhausted due to physical work can effect our thoughts more than we imagine.

It may look stupid or oversimplified but lets take an example from our young-self. Imagine yourself with your mom, visiting a neighbor.

During the first hour of visit, little you would be quite calm and well behaving child. However, as time passes by, you will probably be more angry and ill-tempered. Running around, screaming and maybe even throwing things around…

In such case, you would be able to hear your mom saying;

  • “Oh, its due to his bedtime” or
  • “He should be hungry/thirsty”

As you eat and sleep a well siesta, you can find yourself getting calm and happy again.

So, let’s get back to now and check our adult body. Think of your day, was it so stressful? Or so busy? Of course it will effect your mind and made you feel entrapped maybe. But at the same time, this heavy schedule also made you forget eating properly and get dehydrated.

So what to do?

Chill! Of course you will not abondan your life with a pop-up idea that you don’t know why did it ever came into your mind…. It’s just, the child is father to the man. Your body, hence your mind is just doing the same thing that it was using when you were a child, to solve the bad condition. So you need to calm your body and then your mind will follow.

Think of yourself as a child and act as if. When the “dark side of your thoughts strikes back”;

  • Try to take a seat first and take a deep breath, breathing is not just essential to organize your ideas and give a break to your mind but also will regulate your blood pressure and help your body to slow down.
  • Then, listen to yourself. Are you hungry? When was it the last time you drink water? Do you need to sleep? Do a little check up and meet your needs.
  • You are doing fine with main requirements yet still you feel something’s wrong… Take some deep breath more and go wash your face, lower the temperature of your “surface” to a proper level, as you’d do to a robot. Or you may even take a nice shower to think calmly and find the reason.
  • And finally, now you are in a better mood but a little splinter is still there; take a walk. Go to the nearest park listen some sweet songs from the nature and walk your mind. Leaving the room or house that you were feeling entrapped will change the condition of your mind and may help to find the reason.

And not to forget, depression is a serious psychological condition and requires a professional help. You may handle with bad feelings by the way we describe above but if you constantly feel this way or maybe worse, our most important step would be sharing your thoughts and feelings with a professional and getting help.
